November 12, 2004 Philip Buxton,
LONDON - ITV is to join the online DVD rental market after striking a deal to offer a version of the Video Island service under the name ITV MovieClub.
The service, which will be available at itv.com/movieclub, is set for launch later this year and plans to offer viewers a choice from more than 20,000 DVD rental titles. Colin Ramsay, head of online sales at ITV Sales, said: "By giving ITV MovieClub subscribers access to such a vast selection of movies and the opportunity to rate and review films, we are sure that the ITV MovieClub will quickly become one of the largest online communities of entertainment lovers in the UK." ITV joins Tesco, MSN and Dixons as partners of Video Island, which merged with chief rival ScreenSelect in August. It is fighting a fierce battle for dominance of the UK online DVD rental market with LoveFilm, which has signed deals with Lastminute.com among others, as well as a number of US players, and the high street brand Blockbuster. Saul Klein, CEO of Video Island, said: "Our strategy has always been to team up with the UK's largest national brands to bring DVD rental to the masses. In the world of home entertainment, brands don't get much bigger than ITV." |

TELEVISION group ITV is to launch an online DVD rental service that will allow viewers to borrow from a library of more than 20,000 films for a fixed monthly rental.
The service is being provided by Video Island, already Britain's most successful online DVD rental service with a similar branded version of its offering available through Tesco, MSN and Dixons.
On the face of it, the idea that a television broadcaster should offer its viewers an alternative form of entertainment seems odd. Shouldn't it want them to be watching its broadcasts as they go out?
But Video Island chief executive Saul Klein says: 'TV companies can look at DVDs from the point of view of the glass being half full or half empty. Even the most extensive TV offering, which is Sky Movies with its 10 channels, can probably show only 500 different movies each month. We have a library of more than 20,000 titles.'
ITV will launch ITV MovieClub online before the end of the year, as a showcase for its own first-run films.
Colin Ramsay, who heads the online sales business, said: 'By giving ITV MovieClub subscribers access to such a vast selection of movies, and the opportunity to rate and review films, we are sure that it will quickly become one of the largest online communities of entertainment lovers in the UK.'
DVD use has grown rapidly over the past three years with 67% of UK households having DVD players. |
