Careful trying to cancel !!

I noticed some posts regarding some rebtal companies still taking payment after cancellation - here is what my bank said after I asked them to ensure no further payment was taken by LoveFilm after cancelling fully within their term and conditions ----
We are unable to cancel a debit made using a VISA Debit card. Cancellation requests have to be made to the relevant company.

Most companies use what is called a 'Continuous Authority Merchant' number for these payments. Therefore, even if you cancel the card, the payment can still be taken from your account using the old number.

If you have contacted the company to cancel the regular payment, but a debit is still made the following month, then you need to contact our Visa Chargebacks department on the address below:

that is exactly the problem I had. I had to report it as fraud, to get the money back. However my bank did warn me, there was nothing stopping them taking money again, but they would keep an eye out, and then take the payment back.

The company gets charged by the bank when a payment is taken back, so hopefully this should be enough to stop them trying it more than once

This is surely an open invitation for 'dodgy' companies to help themselves basically.

Exactly what i thought. Lots of companys seem to be moving away from Direct Debit, and just taking card details....you can see why now. If I have to give my card numbers in future, I will use a credit card instead of a debit card, as you seem to have more backup with them
