Lovefilm movie downloads coming in April
| Quote: | Universal partners LoveFilm to offer full movie downloads
Universal Pictures has teamed up with online DVD rental service LoveFilm to sell digital downloads of films, such as ‘King Kong’ and ‘Pride and Prejudice’, for UK consumers to own.
Set to go live on 10 April, the service will let consumers download two digital copies of selected movies, one for a computer and one for a portable device, as well as receive a DVD in the mail.
Universal will be the first major studio to let consumers download films on their PC to own on permanent basis.
The film distributor will initially be offering a collection of 35 movies, including King Kong, Pride and Prejudice and Serenity, selling for around £19.99.
The download-to-own service will also be available through AOL, whose UK online movie service is operated by Lovefilm.
The service will use Microsoft's digital rights management (DRM) technology, to help prevent consumers from copying the movies, burning them to disc or uploading them to the Internet.
Commenting on the security issues raised by the service, Prakash Panjwani, VP of rights management business unit, SafeNet. said: “
Content owners realise they can no longer restrict access to their content in the same way as before, but at the same time recognise the need to implement better piracy management techniques to mitigate the piracy risks, and avoid the financial losses suffered by the music industry over the last five years,” Panjwan added.
Lovefilm already operates a movie download service that provides films from Warner Brothers on a rental basis, meaning the downloads are only accessible for a limited time after purchase.
Mark Livingstone, Lovefilm chief executive, said he expected other Hollywood studios to follow Universal's lead in the download-to-own market. |
